When the cancer afflicted community counts its blessings, certainly its caregivers rank at the top of its lists. Rare, strong,
courageous, loving, compassionate, self-sacrificing people give of themselves to tend to the needs of the afflicted. For some it is
a natural instinct, for others a duty, obligation or family necessity. Whatever the calling, the burnout is a serious threat, risk
and reality.
Retreat for Caregivers
Angel Care is a unique retreat, which enables cancer caregivers the opportunity to share their stories and learn
techniques to enable them to reduce fatigue associated with physical, mental and emotional stress.
Anita (Nita) Domnitz, R.N., M.S., N.D. is our facilitator and her goal is to offer a safe, non-judgmental and nurturing
environment for people who unselfishly give of themselves, and their time to care for people living with cancer.
Angel On My Shoulder recognizes their needs and provides those in the caregiving community the opportunity to gain
insights into self-care and healing. It is our goal to create an environment of love and understanding for these self-sacrificing
angels who give (or have given) of themselves to tend to the needs of those living with cancer.
The majority of day one of the retreat is spent sharing experiences. The overall objective is how to provide the best care and
support for family, friends and patients dealing with cancer; and how to take care of yourself in the process.
The second half of the retreat centers on self-care. Relaxation, education, a communal art project and an honoring ceremony are
the focus. The participants reconvene in the last morning of the retreat to complete the phase on self-care. Contact information is
exchanged among the caregivers, along with warm hugs and fond farewells.
The home of Angel Care is the beautiful Wintergreen Hotel and Conference Center in Wisconsin Dells. The accommodations
and meals are always outstanding. Our heartfelt thanks to Shirley Lewandowski, and the rest of the staff at the Wintergreen for
their above and beyond help and service.
We salute Chuck and Dianne Thompson, and Julie and Bob Johnson, owners of the Wintergreen Hotel and Conference Center, for their
incredible support of this amazing retreat for Caregivers. We absolutely could not do it without them.
The following are some of the comments we received from participants following past retreats:
"Every moment was an inspiration and a healing process. I am aware of my being. God bless you for giving us the opportunity to reflect."
