What is the Camp Angel Experience?
Camp Angel is a cost-free weekend camp for healthy kids 7-12 who are affected by the cancer of a close family member (sibling, parent or grandparent), or who have experienced the loss of a close family member due to cancer. We want to give kids a break cancer and instead give them the time of their lives! At Camp Angel they meet others a facing similar situation and can share fun, positive experiences that uplift and strengthen them.
Camp is held on the beautiful Camp Luther grounds in Three Lakes, Wisconsin. Cost-free transportation is provided to camp via Lamar bus line which starts in West Allis, WI with stops in Oshkosh, Green Bay and Wausau. Chaperones are on board to ensure that campers are well-supervised and safe at all times.
The bus usually arrives at 3 p.m. at Camp Luther to an enthusiastic welcome committee of counselors and staff who show the kids that they can expect a great weekend ahead! Once the group is settled there are introduction, a brief orientation and some fun icebreaker activities. Let the new friendships begin!
Later, the kids discover the unique and creative accommodations which feature the Ark, Fort, Pioneer Village (covered wagons), Tower and Tree Houses. There, they unpack and settle-in before supper.
Following the traditional Friday night pizza feast we welcome our very special annual visitors – the Northern Lights Harley Riders on their awesome motorcycles. The campers can hop on a Harley for photo opportunities and get to see these amazing cycles up close and personal. Then, it’s off to experience a unique and interesting presentation: from a magician to a dog agility course demonstration – you never know who will stop by to entertain us!
Saturday, water rules! Kids can choose amongst swimming, water craft rides (a very favorite), water bikes, canoeing, kayaking and fishing. Kids who prefer to stay dry can express their artistic side with arts and crafts galore. A very special attraction for our summer campers is an intriguing pirate ship adventure down the beautiful Chain O’ Lakes on the Strauss Family’s famous pirate ship. The campers totally enjoy this one-of-a-kind opportunity to be a pirate for a day!!
On Saturday night the kids can dance to the tunes of our very own Angel DJ, Dan Scafaro, and enjoy snacks and refreshments. After leaving it all on the dance floor, campers and counselors return to their campsites for campfires, smores’, games and eventually sleep.
Sunday morning means it’s time to pack-up, fill up on a great breakfast, exchange goodbyes (for now) and board the bus for the trip home with lots of new friends met and happy memories made.
